Turn off the light switch, and allow the bulb to cool. Press inward on the halogen bulb, using both thumbs. Keep the pressure constant on the bulb, and turn the bulb slowly counter-clockwise through about 90 degrees. Once it feels that the bulb won’t turn any further, stop pushing it inward. Pull the bulb out of the socket, wiggling it gently to ensure that it comes out cleanly.

Remove the new bulb from the packaging. Wear gloves to avoid getting oil or grease onto the new bulb. Press the fresh bulb into the socket, pushing it into the same position as the old bulb. Twist the new bulb as far as it will go.

#6 What Is a Fire-rated Downlight?

In a building, the ceiling helps to slow down the spread of a fire. The ceiling will have a fire rating, depending on how efficiently it prevents fire from spreading. If you install a recessed downlight into the ceiling, you may be reducing the ceiling’s fire rating. The hole that the downlight sits in can allow flames to spread between floors quicker and more easily.

A fire-rated downlight contains special material that expands when it becomes hot, sealing the cut-out in which the bulb sits and slowing the spread of a fire.
