Door Knobs
Heritage Brass Door Knobs | Architectural Hardware
A door knob operates by turning — the knob rotates to retract the latch, rather than pressing down on a lever. This turning action gives door knobs a distinct tactile character that a lever handle cannot replicate — making them the natural choice for internal doors where character and finish are part of the design intent.
Our Heritage Brass door knobs are available across two fitting styles — door knobs on rose and door knobs on plate — each suited to different door types and interior styles.
Door Knob Styles — Rose and Plate
The rose and plate are the two mounting styles available across our door knob range. A rose knob uses a small circular plate that covers only the immediate area around the knob, giving a lighter and more compact appearance. A plate knob uses an elongated rectangular backplate that integrates the knob and fixing points into a single more substantial unit — and uniquely, is available in multiple configurations including lever lock, bathroom set, and euro profile.

Materials and Finishes
Our door knobs are available in solid brass, black iron, solid bronze, and porcelain — each suited to different interior styles and budgets. Solid brass is the most extensive material in the range, offering the widest choice of designs and finishes. Solid bronze is available through our Heritage Bronze collection for a characterful rustic aesthetic. Porcelain is available within the rose range, offering a softer decorative character for period schemes. Black iron suits more rustic and industrial interiors.
Finishes across the range include polished brass, antique brass, satin brass, polished chrome, satin chrome, polished nickel, satin nickel, bronze rustic, matt bronze, matt black, porcelain, black antique, and pewter — with availability varying by design. Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a door knob and a door handle?
A door handle uses a lever that is pressed downward to retract the latch. A door knob uses a rotating turning mechanism — the knob is gripped and turned to operate the latch. Door handles are generally more practical for high-traffic applications. Door knobs are chosen where a more decorative or characterful fitting is preferred — particularly on internal doors in period and heritage-influenced interiors where the hardware is part of the overall design scheme.
Can I replace my existing door knob with a Heritage Brass door knob?
In most cases yes, provided your door already has a standard UK tubular latch fitted. Heritage Brass door knobs are half-sprung and compatible with a standard UK tubular latch, meaning the existing latch can typically be retained when replacing like-for-like hardware. If your door does not have a latch fitted, or requires a different locking configuration, browse our locks and latches range for the correct specification before ordering.
Are Heritage Brass door knobs half-sprung?
Yes. All door knobs in our Heritage Brass range are half-sprung, meaning the knob is spring-loaded to return to its resting position after use. This ensures smooth, consistent operation and means the knob will work with a lightly sprung latch. Half-sprung knobs are suitable for standard internal doors — if your door has a particularly heavy or stiff latch mechanism, check the individual product specification before ordering.
