Garden Spike Lights

Garden spike lights are a mains-powered outdoor lighting solution designed to push into soil, lawn, or pathways and direct focused light exactly where it is needed — uplighting a feature tree, tracing a pathway edge, or washing light across planting. Every fitting in this range runs on 240v from a permanent outdoor supply, providing consistent brightness year-round without the seasonal fade of solar alternatives. Two 12V low-voltage models are also available.

All fittings carry a minimum IP65 rating — fully dust-tight and protected against water projected from any direction, making them suitable for UK gardens in all seasons. Select models are rated IP66 for greater resistance in more exposed positions. These are weatherproof and splash-resistant fittings.

The range covers two lamp types. GU10-compatible spike lights accept any standard GU10 LED lamp, giving you independent control over beam angle, brightness, and colour temperature — useful when you want a narrow spot for a tree trunk or a warmer 3000K source for a softer garden atmosphere. The adjustable GU10 spike light is the most versatile option in the range and is dimmable when paired with a compatible lamp and dimmer. Integrated LED models are pre-fitted with a fixed LED source — a lower-maintenance choice when output flexibility is not a priority. The 5W black integrated LED spike light is IP65 rated with an adjustable head, and no separate lamp purchase is required.

Most fittings offer up to 90° tilt and swivel, so the beam can be redirected after installation without repositioning the spike. For taller trees or large shrubs, the long-spike adjustable model raises the light source higher while keeping the same directional control. Fittings are available in a range of finishes, including matt black, stainless steel and antique brass, with further options available across the range.

For guidance on placement, beam angles, IP ratings, and colour temperature, see our garden spike lights planning guide.

Are these garden spike lights solar powered?

No. All fittings in this range are mains powered (240v), with two 12v low-voltage models also available. Mains-powered spike lights deliver consistent brightness every evening, regardless of weather or season — unlike solar fittings, which can lose output through winter or extended overcast periods. A permanent outdoor power supply installed by a qualified electrician is required.

What is the difference between IP65 and IP66?

Both ratings provide complete dust protection. IP65 protects against low-pressure water jets from any direction — sufficient for standard UK garden conditions, including heavy rain. IP66 extends protection to higher-pressure water jets, suitable for more exposed positions or areas subject to direct irrigation spray. For most residential gardens, IP65 is adequate.

What does GU10 compatible mean, and is a lamp included?

GU10-compatible spike lights accept a standard GU10 LED lamp, sold separately. This lets you choose beam angle, brightness, and colour temperature independently of the fitting, and replace the lamp without changing the fixture. Integrated LED models have a fixed light source built in — no separate lamp needed.

What colour temperature works best for garden spike lights?

2700K to 3000K (warm white) suits most UK gardens — warm enough to look natural against planting and not clinical after dark. 2700K is ideal for intimate, low-impact schemes; 3000K is a strong all-rounder. Avoid 4000K+ for planted borders, though it can suit minimal architectural schemes.

Can I adjust the beam direction after installation?

Yes. Adjustable-head models in this range offer up to 90° of tilt and swivel, so you can refine the angle without moving the spike from the ground. This is particularly useful when planting grows or when experimenting with the aim after dark.

How many garden spike lights do I need?

Fewer than most people expect. Identify two or three specific features — a tree, a planted border, a pathway edge — and use one well-aimed fitting per feature. Add more only if the scheme feels incomplete after a few evenings. Our planning guide covers placement and zoning in detail.

Do I need an electrician to install garden spike lights?

A qualified electrician is required to install or extend an outdoor power circuit under UK building regulations. Once the supply is in place, the fitting itself is straightforward — spike into the ground, connect to the supply, and adjust the head.
